Ukraine: Fragments of Life

On April 2023 I decided to go to Ukraine with Luda, my girlfriend’s grandmother. She lives in Italy but sometimes  she comes back to her family in Cherkasy, a small city in the center of Ukraine. Since the war has started Luda is living a difficult time: she is safe here but she is constantly worried about her family. Her husband, Gregory, lives in Ukraine with their son Taras, Taras’ wife, Yana, and their daughter Solomia. I spent some weeks to explore and document life of civil persons, from their point of view. I departed from Rome with Luda. 45 hours of bus through Europe in order to arrive directly to Cherkasy. Once there I met her family, her friends. We traveled to Kiev – were Yana’s aunt lives – Irpin and Bucha, where people wants to live a normal life, even when the sound of the air alarm starts. This his the story of a woman whose life has completely changed on February 2022, but it is also the story of many Ukrainians struggling for their life, trying to normalize this war and pretending that all of this will be over soon.
